Partner Shape-Up

"For better or for worse"-- or maybe it should have been - "for thinner or for thicker?" Reminiscing through old photos of your lover, partner or spouse, you admire their terrifically fit body, but you can't help but to admit what is already so obvious today-the weight gain.

You try to convince yourself that you're being superficial. You stand by your partner for his wholesome values and wonderful sense of humor, not his waist size. But even though you love your mate no less, you have to admit there's a lot more to love.

While you probably don't want to be considered anything but "supportive" and "adoring," dropping too many hints to "get in shape" can easily be misinterpreted as criticism. But creative planning with your mate by making fitness fun, instead of a chore can point both of you in a healthy direction. Shaping-up can be a lot more successful with a partner. By incorporating a few of the following exercises and tips into your daily regimen, you will both enjoy getting fit-together.

Romance Your Mate with Healthy Meals

Encourage healthy eating habits by adding a little romance to each meal. Whether it's a packed lunch with charming handwritten notes, or a romantic dinner by the fire, choose lower-fat foods such as pasta or a lean meat dish. Avoid creamy sauces and processed foods. Try adding broiled chicken to a red tomato base sauce over pasta for a low fat meal. Consult your local library or bookstore more low-fat recipes. For easy snacking, keep ready-to-eat fresh veggies and fruits in the refrigerator.

Make a Gym Date

Schedule a date to the gym at least once a week with the promise of something "better to come." Attend an exercise class together, or partner up for a weight lifting session, alternating turns spotting each other. Return home to deliver the reward of a sensual massage. Begin with the feet. Deliver long, smooth strokes, working your way over the entire body. Exotic music in the background can add additional romance.

Experience New Areas

Plan a day trip for a hike to a local park. Each season brings different scenery and views. Start with a 60-minute hike that includes a few rolling hills. Local newspapers often publish great hiking paths. Check out books on trails through the library or bookstore. Most trail maps offer a description of the route and the difficulty level. Pack plenty of water and healthy snacks, such fresh fruit and whole-wheat sandwiches with low-fat peanut butter. Bring an extra jacket in case the weather changes, as it frequently does at higher altitudes.

Dance Your Way to Fitness

Dancing may be one of the most "fun" ways to exercise. Whatever your fancy-big bands, retro music or the salsa, an evening of kicking up your heels on the dance floor not only gets the heart beating, but also tones leg muscles. Dance classes can also offer regular exercise for both you and your partner, and offer the chance to learn a few new moves. Check your local paper for a live band.

Experience "Runner's High"

Aerobic activity such as walking and running will not only make you look better on the outside, but will rev up hormones, burn away fat and rejuvenate the body, filling you with energy for when you need it most. Choose scenic areas such as a park, lake or beach area for long walks. Invite another couple to join in. Enter a local 5K (3.1 miles) running race or walk to benefit a charity. Invite another couple to join you for the activity.

Be patient and keep a positive mindset for both you and your partner. Realize that small changes in your diet and lifestyle will result in permanent healthy lifestyle changes. Making exercise and healthy eating a priority for both you and your partner will make you both two hot commodities.
