Heat Up Your Winter with Exercise
by Nan Kappeler (topic expert: fitness)

Shorter days, woolen clothing, chillier weather and warm fires aren't always the best motivators to help you stick to your daily exercise program. The mind may be thinking exertion, but the body says hibernation. And with the holiday season lurking just around the corner, it may be more inviting to nest on the couch with a blanket and hot chocolate in front of the television, than to head out the front door for a walk into freezing headwind.

A study of 5,000 people found that 30% get no exercise during the winter months, contributing to holiday stress, depression and weight gain. Studies have also proved that fresh air and sun give us energy, even in the cold. Just a short, brisk walk outdoors can replenish energy levels, lift spirits and help maintain body weight. The increased flow of blood and oxygen throughout your body can help relieve holiday pressures. A small dose of commitment to a winter exercise program now can make sure that fitness won't have to be on the top of your New Year's resolution list.

So how can you keep your promise to keep moving and stay fit year-round? It's easy -- all it takes is some simple planning and the decision to make the right choices now that will keep you focused. Check out the following suggestions and you'll keep your exercise resolutions on track year-round.

  1. Decide now that weather won't be a deterrent. Purchase clothes that are made specifically for outdoor exercise. Choose a turtleneck shirt, a walking jacket, pants, gloves and a hat. Material such as Cool Max and Dry Fit will help to keep you warm and absorb sweat during exercise. Check out the WalkStyles clothing line. The pants and jackets are not only stylish, but provide warmth and ventilation during colder weather.
  2. Have an alternate plan for bad weather days. Some of my best runs have been during the snow, but when snow turns to slush, the streets and sidewalks are no fun. On those days, attend classes at a gym or community center. Check out indoor pools run by the county and city. Many facilities offer weight rooms and fitness classes at nominal fees. Try out the classes prior to the winter to determine which ones best suit your needs.
  3. Plan to carry water during all activities. It's easy to back off on the water when the weather cools. But you still need to stay hydrated, especially during the holidays. Good hydration also helps to keep joints lubricated and aids in weight loss. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
  4. Map out walking or running routes that incorporate new or interesting scenery. During the winter, I look forward to routes that take me through neighborhoods filled with Christmas decorations or along decorated storefronts. Plan holiday walks with friends. Make the event a family affair and dress up in festive clothes for the activity.
  5. Take advantage of winter activities. Shoveling snow burns 500 calories an hour. Building a snowman can put you in a sweat. Cross country skiing is another high intensity activity that can keep you warm and fit during the coldest days.

Keep moving throughout the year. By staying in shape this winter, you'll enter 2008 feeling strong and fit. Perform the exercises above, or add your own -- but don't make cold weather an excuse not to exercise this winter.
